Home fire escape
In a fire, getting out fast matters more than anything. Never go back inside.
This is a preparation aid, not a substitute for emergency services. In a life-threatening situation, call your local emergency number first.

If you smell smoke or the alarm sounds
- Alert everyone in the home immediately
- Feel the door with the back of your hand before opening it
- Stay low under smoke and cover your nose and mouth
Getting out
- Use the nearest safe exit; do not stop for belongings
- Close doors behind you if it slows the fire without delaying you
- Use the stairs, never the lift
Once outside
- Call your local emergency number from a safe place
- Go to your agreed meeting point and count everyone
- Tell the fire service if someone is still inside
- Never re-enter the building
